Every year on February 2 World Wetlands Day is celebrated across the globe. This year celebration occurs under the theme of Wetlands action for people and nature. The day is celebrated to raise public awareness about wetlands and strengthen the effort of wetland conservation. Countries organise various events like seminars, lectures, community efforts for wetlands, artwork and virtual shows to raise wetland awareness.

why 2nd February?
On 2nd February 1971, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat, an International Treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands signed. And to mark that day 2nd February is chosen as the day of the World Wetlands Day celebration. First World Wetlands Day was celebrated in 1997.

What is a Wetland?
Ramsar Convention defined Wetlands as “areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres”.

  • Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, spread over Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay
  • Sundarban wetland is the largest wetland in India.
  • Smallest Wetland in India: Renuka Lake (Himachal Pradesh).
