Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister of Karnataka announced that the “Upper Bhadra Project” was granted national project status after a  Central Water Commission’s High Powered Steering Committee meeting. With this 60% of the project, the cost will be from Central Govt. This is the first project from Karnataka to get National Project status. Once completed it can play a major role in transforming central Karnataka from a water-scarce to a water-rich region.

Details about Upper Bhadra Project:

On River- Bhadra River and Tunga River. Bhadra River meets with the Tunga river then flow as Tungabhadra, a major tributary of the Krishna River.

Place- Start from Bhadra reservoir, in Karnataka.

Project aim- It's a major lift irrigation project that will irrigate an estimated 2.25 lakh hectares of land. Upper Bhadra Project will lift around 17.40 tmcft of water from the Tunga River to Bhadra Reservoir then nearly 30 tmcft of water will be lifted from Bhadra Reservoir to irrigate 2.25 lakh hectares of land.
