The state of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram today celebrates their Statehood day on 20th February:
Two northeastern states of India, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram celebrated their statehood day on Saturday, 20th February. Both states attained statehood on February 20, 1987, following the 53rd and 55th Amendment of the Indian Constitution in 1986
Why 20th February?
Through the 53rd and 54th Constitutional Amendments of the Constitution in 1986, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh became the 23rd and 24th states of India on 20 February 1987.
During the period of independence, Mizo Hill Area become Lusai, a hill district within Assam. In 1954 it was renamed Mizo Hill District of Assam. Later Mizoram was made a Union Territory in 1982 when the Union Govt of India signed a deal with moderates of the Mizo National Front(MNF), by curving out Mizo Hill District from Assam. And finally the Central government and Mizo National Front(MNF) sign Mizoram Peace Accords in 1986 and as per the accord, the Union Territory of Mizoram become a full-fledged state.
In 1914 some tribal areas from Assam province, to form North-East Frontier Tract(NEFT). After Independence NEFT was renamed From North-East Frontier Agency(NEFA) with some added regions. In 1972 NEFA becomes a Union Territory and came to be known as Arunachal Pradesh. And finally, On January 20, 1982, Arunachal Pradesh becomes a Full state with Itanagar as its capital.
