The first geological park or geopark of India to come up in Madhya Pradesh. The Geological Survey of India, under the ministry of mining, gave the approval for the setting up of the geopark at Lamheta village. The site is located on the bank of the Narmada River in Jabalpur district, will be built at a cost of Rs 35 cr. spanning over 5 acres of land.

Local MP Rakesh Singh said," This site is already there in the UNESCO geo-heritage tentative list of natural heritage. Several dinosaur fossils had been found in the Narmada valley, particularly in the Bhedaghat-Lamheta Ghat area of Jabalpur". In this context, it is important to note that In 1828 William Henry Sleeman, an Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer had discovered a Dinosaur fossil from this area for the first time.

What is a Geological or GeoPark?

Geopark is an effort for the conservation of rock formations of geological significance. It promotes geological heritage in sustainable manners which in turn make a base for the economic well being of local people by enabling effective tourism and enable research work accessible for grooming scholars.

Why Lahmeta as the site?

Lameta Formation also known as Infratrappean Beds is a sedimentary geological formation found in the states Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The name lameta is derived from the village lamheta where the first Dinosaur fossil of Deccan was found. Moreover, it is very rich in fossil rocks. That's why lamheta is chosen as the desired site.
