A roadmap for Blue Economy was signed by India and France under which enhanced bilateral exchanges on the blue economy and ocean governance will happen between these two country. India's Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar signed this deal during his three-day visit to France, from February 20 to 22, 2022, to attend EU Ministerial Forum for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific on February 22. The ‘Roadmap on Blue Economy and Ocean Governance’ was signed between Dr S Jaishankar and his French coequal Jean-Yves Le Drian.

BLUE ECONOMY-

Economy activity related to the marine environment is termed as Blue Economy. In recent times the term is more related to the sustainable development of marine and economic activity at the same time. The World Bank defines a blue economy as the 'sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystem' UN believe that Blue Economy can aid in achieving SDG goal 14 i.e. Life Below Water.

How did India and France collaborate on the 'Roadmap on Blue Economy and Ocean Governance'?

  • India-France will explore and collaborate on marine-related research to understand the ocean and what it can offer to mankind.
  • Laid emphasise the ocean as food security and livelihood security.
  • Work jointly on ensuring the ocean remain common and free for trade.
