Eminent Singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay Passed away after cardiac arrest (age 90). Born in Dhakuria, Kolkata Sandhya Mukhopadhyay started her music lessons under Pandit Santosh Kumar Basu. Later she started to attend training under Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, one of the great voice of patiala ghara, to master classical Indian music.
She started her career in playback singing with hindi song in the film Tarana, 1950. Later she comeback to Kolkata to settle here and married to Shyamal Gupta, a Bengali poet. After 1960 Sandhya Mukhopadhyay became a well known name among every household of Bengal. Her duet work with Hemanta Mukherjee achieved a whole new height and all songs became huge hit among listeners.
During the liberation war of Bangladesh, she participated in the fund raising campaign in Kolkata and when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman released from she released a song, 'Bangabandhu Tumi Phirey Ele'. Later she became the first foreign artist to visit dhaka and perform in the celebration of Ekushey February. For her songs in Nishi Padma (Ore Sakol Sona Molin Holo) and Jay Jayanti (Amader Chuti Chuti) Movies, She got the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer 1970.
Before 2022 Republic Day the Government of India decided to confer Padma Shri award to her for her contribution in the field of Music. But Sandhya Mukhopadhyay rejected the award as she thinks the way it was addressed is disparaging and degrading.
