India becomes the first nation to administer a COVID-19 DNA vaccine as the govt of India allowed emergency use of ZyCoV-D Vaccine. ZyCoV-D is a covid vaccine based on DNA plasmid developed by pharma conglomerate Cadila Healthcare Limited or Zydus- Cadila. Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) helped and supported Cadila for the vaccine development. BIRAC is a Public Sector Undertaking, that empowers strategically emerging biotech companies.
ZyCoV-D was administered for the first time in Patna, Bihar. The vaccine is needleless and causes no pain, will be given at an interval of 28 days and 56 days. It is the second India-developed vaccine to get emergency authorization in India after Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.
In the phase-III trial, the vaccine shows an efficiency rate of 66.6% against symptomatic COVID-19 and against moderate or severe cases it stands at 100%. Zydus is currently operating with a capacity of 240 million doses in a year.
