Recently the government of India has banned 54 apps of Chinese origin due to security concerns. The list of the banned apps includes the very popular game Garena Free Fire and other apps connected to firms like Tencent, Alibaba and NetEase. Most of the apps are re-branded versions of apps banned by Govt. of India in 2020. Free Fire is a game with quite a similar interface to PUBG. With more than $1 billion gross worldwide and over 150 million daily active users, it is one of the most popular mobile games.

Why a Ban?
  • Most of these apps are either cloned or modified versions of Previously banned apps.
  • These app stores confidential data in data centres outside the Country.
  • Govt thinks the Chinese authorities can use these apps for accessing the personal data of users.

Under which act govt of India bans all these apps?
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned all these apps using the provision of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. Section 69A of this app empowers the central govt to issue directives for blocking public access to any information through any computer resource. This section allows the government to block websites, apps or any electrical medium resource.
