 2 Sanctuary sites were added to the list of Ramsar Sites in India:


On the occasion of World Wetland Day(2nd February), Two new Sites namely, Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh and Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat have been added to the list of Wetlands of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention. With this, the number of Ramsar sites in India goes up to 49, the highest in South Asia. The total area covered under Ramsar Site in India is over 1million hectares.

It's Important to note that, Four sites were added to the Ramsar List of India in 2021 namely Thol and Wadhwana from the state of Gujrat along with Sultanpur and Bhindawas from Haryana. With the addition of the Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary now Uttar Pradesh stands atop among all states with the Nine Ramsar Site
