The first graphene innovation centre of India will be set up in Kerala by the Digital University Kerala (DUK) in collaboration with the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) in Thrissur, for an outline budget of Rs 86.41 crore. This will be the first graphene Research and Development (R&D) incubation hub in the nation. Tata Steel Limited is designated to be the industrial partner of the centre.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, has given its clearance for the assignment. The project will be implemented with the support of the Kerala government, is expected to accelerate the state’s growth in the knowledge and skill industry sector.

What is Graphene?
It's an allotrope of Carbon with a single layer (monolayer) arrangement in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice. Graphene is known for its remarkable electrical and electronic properties, along with its lightweight which places it in the place where researchers think it can replace indium and thereby bring down the cost of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens in smartphones. The largest probable function that can graphene do is in the use of a supercapacitor.

Special Notes for Aspirants:
