Star Rating System launched by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change:
Under the Star Rating System, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will rank the State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAA) based on the time taken to grant environment clearance.
The star rating system provides marks to the SEIAA on a scale of seven. Two marks will be awarded for clearing a project in less than 80 days. One mark for approval within 105 days. Zero for clearing more than this duration. If the state has less than 10% of projects for scrutiny, then one mark is provided. The top-rated state will be incentivised by the centre.
The decision was taken last month after a cabinet meeting, to meet the aim of a more Business Friendly Environment and ultimately improve India's Ease of Doing Business. Environment legal practitioners fear this could mean competing with each other in granting faster clearances without addressing environmental concerns properly.
