Scientific Bird Atlas- a first of its kind prepared by Kerala:
The state of Kerala prepared a Scientific Bird Atlas named Kerala Bird Atlas (KBA), first-of-its-kind State-level bird atlas in India. It was created with strong scientific data about the distribution and abundance of bird species across all major habitats in Kerala, giving an impetus to futuristic studies.
Kerala Bird Atlas was prepared over a period ranging from 2015 to 2020 with a systematic survey of 60 days in dry and wet sessions each year. Over 1000+ volunteers of the birdwatching community joined the survey to make it a grand success with nearly three lakh recordings of 361 species. One of the key findings of the survey is that species counts were higher during the dry season than in the wet season while species richness and evenness were higher in the northern and central districts of Kerala than in the southern districts.
Ecologist's think that it is arguably the largest bird atlas in terms of sampling effort, geographical extent and species coverage. They hope that on the back of its huge sampling size, behavioural study and place distinction, in future it can be used for science-backed conservation measures and testing various ecological hypotheses.
