ROBERTA METSOLA WAS ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN UNION PARLIAMENT :

Roberta Metsola was elected president of the European Parliament. Metsola, the 43-year-old youngest president of the European Parliament, was elected the first woman in the role for 20 years.

Although Metsola is on record as anti-abortion, she claimed to be in favor of LGBT rights. Metsola, a Maltese citizen, took over this role from David Sassoli, who died last week at the age of 65 due to a serious illness. Metsola is one of three women in top EU jobs with the heads of the European Commission and the Central Bank. At press conferences, she was repeatedly asked for her views on women's reproductive rights. She faced a lot of criticism for her voting record on the issue. Contextually, Malta is a predominantly Catholic country and the only EU member state that has a complete ban on abortion.
