Narayan Debnath, Creator of famous Bengali comics Handa Bhonda,Bantul the great and Nonte Phonte, passes away:

Narayan Debnath, one of the most celebrated cartoonist, illustrator and writer of the Bengali language dies at 97 after a prolonged illness.

He is the creator of many popular comic characters, like Handa Bhonda, Bantul the great and Nonte Phonte. He is one of those few prominent people whose creation reached almost every household of Bengal. Patolchand the magician, Bahadur Beral, Sutki Mutki, Detective Koushik Roy are a few of his other creations.

Narayan Debnath holds the record for longest-running comic by an individual artist for his Handa Bhonda Comic series. He is also the first and only comic artist of India to be awarded a D. Litt. On 26th January 2021, he was awarded the Padma Shri award by Govt. of India. Narayan Debnath was also awarded Sahitya Academy Award(2013) and Banga Bibhusan(by West Bengal Govt. in 2013).
