 Maya Angelou becomes the first black woman to appear on US coin:

Maya Angelou, an American poet and Civil Rights activist, became the first black woman to appear on USA coin. The United State treasury minted a US 25 cent coin with his face depicted. Earlier she earned the distinct feat of becoming the first black woman to write and perform a poem at a presidential inauguration when she recite her poem 'On the pulse of morning' at US President Bill Clinton's inauguration.

Maya Angelou was also awarded the highest US civilian award, 'Presidential Medal of Freedom', in 2010 by President Barack Obama.
