JALLIKATTU FESTIVAL HAS BEEN HELD IN TAMIL NADU :
Jallikattu festival was held at Avaniapuram in Madurai district on the occasion of Pongal. This traditional bull taming game of Tamil Nadu started on 14th January 2022. Due to the re-emergence of Covid-19 in India, the first bull taming game of 2022 was held with the strict Covid protocol.
The bull taming game Jallikattu is conducted as part of the Mattu Pongal on the third day of the four-day harvest festival. The Tamil word "mattu" means bull. The third day of Pongal is dedicated to cattle. This is because cattle are an important partner in the farming process. On Thursday, the day before the event, a total of 300 bull tamers and 660 bulls were registered and the organisers set a time limit for each bull tamer. According to the rules, the winner is chosen based on how long a tamer holds on the bull's hump. No more than 150 visitors were allowed under the new guidelines. With that, occupancy in places was limited to 50 percent. Not only that, a negative Covid report or Covid vaccination was mandatory for viewers to view the events. But with more than 150 people in attendance, the district authorities had a hard time managing the crowd. Since January 16 was a complete lockdown, Alaganallu Jallikattu was postponed to January 17. The Madras High Court ordered the Tamil Nadu state government to allow domestic bulls to participate in the game instead of foreign or hybrid bulls.
