 India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021:

India State of Forest Report (ISFR) is a biennial report for the assessment of India's forests. The report is prepared by the Forest Survey of India, an organisation under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT:
  • Total Forest and Tree cover stand at 24.62% of the geographical area.
  • Total Forest Cover- 21.71%
  • Total Tree Cover- 2.91%
  • In comparison to ISFR, 2019 total forest and tree cover saw an increase of 0.28 %.
  • Top five states that shows forest cover increase- Andhra Pradesh> Telangana> Odisha> Karnataka >Jharkhand.
  • Among mega-city Hyderabad shows the highest increase in forest cover,
  • Area Wise largest forest covering the state- Madhya Pradesh> Arunachal Pradesh > Chhattisgarh >Odisha >Maharashtra
  • 17 states/UTs have above 33 per cent of the geographical area under forest cover.
  • Lakshadweep, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Meghalaya have more than 75 per cent forest cover.
  • Mangrove Cover 0.15% of total area, increased by 17 sq km in comparison to the last report
  • Top three state that shows mangrove cover increase- Odisha>Maharashtra> Karnataka
  • West Bengal housed the largest mangrove forest cover
  • 22.47% of forests prone to fire
  • Bamboo bearing area decreased compared to ISFR 2019 report
  • Highest forest cover by percentage- Mizoram{84.53%}
  • States showing loss in forest cover: Arunachal Pradesh > Manipur > Nagaland > Mizoram > Meghalaya.
  • Maximum Tree Cover: Maharashtra > Rajasthan >Madhya Pradesh > Karnataka > Uttar Pradesh
  • Maximum Tree Cover as a percentage of area: Chandigarh > Delhi > Kerala > Goa
