GANJAM DISTRICT OF ODISHA HAS BEEN DECLARED FREE OF CHILD MARRIAGES DISTRICT :
On January 3, 2022, Ganjam district of Odisha has been declared a child marriage-free district. District collector Vijay Amruta Kulange has reported the news.
Kulange said that in view of the marriage statistics held in 2020 and 2021, they have decided to declare Ganjam district as a child marriage free district. People who inform the district administration about child marriage will be given a reward of Rs. 50,000 as against Rs. 5,000 previously. Kluange added that the district was severely infamous for child marriage but that the necessary measures taken by the administration in a few years were producing the desired results. Incidentally, in September 2019 the district administration launched an innovative awareness campaign Nirbhaya Kadhi. Its purpose is to empower adolescents and prevent child marriage. At that time, a reward of Rs 5,000 was announced for encouraging people to inform the administration about child marriage and block development officers, tehsildars, and district child development project officers visited the village to verify the demands regarding the non-occurrence of child marriages. They then recommend them to be declared child marriage free.
District officials claimed that 45, 228 and 201 upcoming child marriages have been prevented in the last three years, respectively, since the Nirbhaya Kadhi campaign started and a total of 14,422 meetings were held at different stages in the last two years to prevent child marriages.
