DR. S. SOMNATH HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS THE NEW ISRO CHAIRMAN :

      Renowned rocket scientist Dr. S. Somnath has been appointed as the new Chairman and Space Secretary of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, ISRO has announced his appointment. Dr. Somnath is going to succeed in Kailasavadivoo Sivan's post of Chairman of ISRO. Sivan has completed his extended term on 14 January.

      According to a Personnel Ministry order, Dr. Somnath has been appointed for a term of three years from the date of joining the post. He has been appointed for a combined term of three years with an extension of the term after the age of dismissal in the public interest. Generally, the responsibility of the chairman of ISRO, the Space Secretary, and the Space Commission chief is always in the hands of one person. Born in July 1963, Dr. Somnath did his Masters in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore with a specialization in structures, dynamics, and control and B Tech in Mechanical Engineering from TKM college of engineering, Kollam. Not only that, he got a gold medal for his performance. He is currently the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He led the team for the Integration of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV for short) early in his career. He also led the first test flight of the LVM3-X / CARE mission which was successfully launched on 18 December 2014. He is going to be the 10th chairman of ISRO. In addition, he took over as head of VSSC on January 22, 2018, after two and a half years as Director of the Liquid Propulsion System Center (LPSC). Not only that, he was the Associate Director (Projects) of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center and Project Director of GSLV Mk-EEE launch vehicle.
