BANGLADESH HAS DISCOVERED HUGE NATURAL GAS HYDRATE DEPOSITS IN BAY OF BENGAL :
Bangladesh has found huge potential natural gas hydrate deposits in the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh has discovered huge deposits of 0.11 to 0.73 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in the exclusive economic zone of the country.
In Dhaka on January 5, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen said that this is equivalent to 17 to 103 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. The study was going on for the last three. It was conducted by Petrobangla, Bapex, local experts and the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK and through this has come the preliminary idea about the location and nature of gas hydrate discovery. Foreign Minister Dr. Momen praised the results of the study. He said the results of the study were very encouraging and the search for huge reservoir of natural gas hydrate is a landmark event in solving the future energy crisis. The production technology of methane gas from hydrate is fundamentally different from that of oil and natural gas extraction. It flows naturally through the vents of the reservoir to the well. Hydrates are solids. To get rid of methane gas, these need to be isolated through strategic means such as hot water pumping, depressurisation and Carbon Dioxide injection.
