WORLD'S TALLEST BRIDGE PIER IS BEING BUILT IN MANIPUR :
Construction of the world's tallest bridge pier is underway in Manipur. Indian Railways is responsible for the construction of this bridge. The bridge is being constructed to connect the capital of Manipur with the country's broad gauge network under the 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal railway project.
The bridge is being built at a height of 141 meters above the ground, making it the tallest bridge in the world. The bridge will surpass the existing record of 139 meters in the Mala - Rijeka viaduct in Montenegro, Europe. According to Sandeep Sharma, Chief Engineer of the project, the distance between Jiribam-Imphal (NH-37) will be reduced from 220 km to 111 km once the project is completed. Currently where Jiribam-Imphal takes 10 to 12 hours to travel, it will take about 2 to 2.5 hours to travel after completion of the project. He expects the bridge to be completed by December 2023. According to the Chief Engineer Sandeep Sharma, the total estimated cost of the bridge is Rs 374 crore and the 111 km project consists of 61 per cent of tunnels. Indian Railways is facing many hurdles in the construction of this bridge. Landslides continue to occur on NH-37 during the rainy season. It is extremely difficult to work from April to October, and there are rebellion issues that occasionally disrupt it.
