KAZHUVELI WETLAND HAS BEEN PROCLAIMED AS 16TH BIRD SANCTUARY IN TAMIL NADU :

      Kazhuveli wetland has been identified as the 16th bird sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. On Monday 6 December 2021 Environment and Forests Secretary Supriya Sahu announced the creation of Kazhuveli bird sanctuary. An area of 5,151.60 hectares of ​​Vanur and Marakkanam talukas have been consolidated for the creation of the bird sanctuary.

      According to a statement issued by the government, the sanctuary will be formed by combining Seyyankuppam, Chettikuppam, Anumandai, Keelputhupattu, Koonimedu Thiruakkanur villages with the Kazhuveli saltwater lake wetland area of ​​Nadukuppam in Marakkanam taluk and Kilapakkam, Kazhuvari, Kazhuperumbakkam, Karattai and Devanandal villages of vanur taluk. In other words, an area of 3,027.35 hectares in eight villages of Marakkanam taluk and an area of 2,124.35 hectares in five villages of Vanur taluk have been used for creation of sanctuary. Adequate ecological, fauna, inflorescence and geological importance are present in this area for which it is possible to protect, promote and develop wildlife and its environment. The creation of Kazhuveli bird sanctuary is very important because it is not only home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, but also a feeding ground for migrants from cold subarctic regions of Central Asia and Siberia, including Black-tailed Godwits, Eurasian Curlew, White Stork and Ruff. Contextually, Kazhuveli wetland is considered to be the second largest saltwater lake in South India, covering an area of ​​670 sq km.
