POCHAMPALLY IN TELANGANA HAS BEEN SELECTED AS ONE OF THE BEST TOURISM VILLAGES :
The Pochampally in Telangana has been selected as one of the best tourist villages. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has recently made this decision. The prestigious award will be presented on the occasion of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly on 2 December 2021. This session will be held in Madrid, Spain.
Pochampally is a town in Nalgonda district in Telangana. It is often referred to as the "Silk City of India" for its fine sarees woven in a unique style called Ikat. Pochampally Ikat had received a Geographical Indicator (GI tag) in 2004. The Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) G K Reddy has congratulated the people of this village. According to him, Pochampally's unique weaving style and patterns have given special focus to a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat through Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Vocal for Local" mantra. The purpose of UNWTO's pilot initiative "Best Tourism Village" is to reward villages that show outstanding examples of rural destinations and show good practices consistent with its specific nine assessment areas. One of the aims of the initiative is to help those villages to increase their rural tourism potential. Three villages from India, Kongthong in Meghalaya, Ladhpura Khas in Madhya Pradesh and Pochampally in Telangana were selected for the award.
