INDIA'S 71ST GRANDMASTER IS SANKALP GUPTA :
Sankalp Gupta has become the 71st Grandmaster of India. He has finished second in the GM Ask 3 round-robin event with a score of 6.5. The event was held in Arandjelovac, Serbia. He has secured the three required GM norms by playing three tournaments on trot, his rating performance was 2599 and above.
To win the Grandmaster title, a player must secure at least three GM norms, with its live rating exceeding 2500 Elo points. Sankalp Gupta from Maharashtra also touched the 2500 rating mark in the tournament. He won five games, drew three and lost to Russia's Rudik Markrarain to claim second place in the GM tournament with 6.5 points. Rudik has won first place in Markrarain's GM tournament. Sankalp's victory has been lauded, with chess legend and former world champion Viswanathan Anand applauding Gupta.
