ARUNACHAL PRADESH HAS APPROVED "KAISER-I-HIND" BUTTERFLY AS STATE BUTTERFLY :

The Arunachal Pradesh government has recently declared "Kaiser-i-Hind" as the state butterfly. The "Kaiser-i-Hind" butterfly is large in size and brightly colored butterfly. The word "Kaiser-i-Hind" literally translates into "Emperor of India".

The Great Butterfly is found along the Eastern Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim and Manipur. This butterfly is very important and popular for having "India" in its name. The "Kaiser-i-Hind" butterfly cannot be confused with any other species of butterfly. The male butterfly of this species has a bright chrome-yellow patch on each hind wing. They have wingspans of 90 to 120 mm and are found in well-forested terrain at altitudes of 6000 to 10,000 feet above sea level. According to WWF India, this species of butterfly can fly very fast. They usually fly to the top of the tree, but in the early morning sunlight, they spend time sitting on the trees below. These butterflies, which fly from April to July, lay their eggs under the leaves of the tree. Their eggs are pale purple red in color and smooth and round in shape. The main reason behind the selection of state butterflies for this species of butterfly is that it is a rare and spectacular swallowtail species of butterfly. The IUCN red-listed butterfly is protected by Indian law under Schedule II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
