GANDHI JAYANTI :
Every year on 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated all over the country. This day is celebrated to recall the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian freedom fighter, philosopher as well as a non-violent leader. This day is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhi's leadership has inspired new generations of people as he made significant contributions to India's independence from 200 years of British colonial rule. This day is also celebrated all over the world as International Day of Non-Violence because Gandhiji took the nation to freedom through his non-violent civil disobedience movements. Many schools and colleges across the country celebrate this day through various competitions such as speech, essay, drama competition and many more. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, one year after independence, and this day is celebrated as National Martyrs' Day to mark the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
SPECIAL NOTES FOR ASPIRANTS :
• 2nd October is also celebrated as the International day of Non- Violence .International day of Non-Violence was first observed in 2007.
• Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.
• Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore gave Gandhi the title of 'Mahatma'.
• He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and a few days before he was assassinated in 1948.
• He contributed to the Indian freedom movements as well as fought for change in society also he fought against caste discrimination in India.
