The government of Barbados announced in 2020 that it was time to completely remove Barbados from its colonial past and make it a republic country. This change was recommended in 1998 by a constitutional review. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley called the historic election, which followed a joint session of the House of Assembly and Senate, a "seminal moment" for the country. The population of this country is about 285,000. That is why it is one of the most populous and prosperous island states in the Caribbean islands. At one time the country was heavily dependent on sugar exports. Now its economy has diversified into tourism and finance.
