Why vocabulary is important for precis writing?

Vocabulary is the back bone of any precis writing . Simply because you have to summarize the thought expressed in a lengthy paragraph .

To know the importance vocabulary , you need to understand what is precis writing all about . Lets get a brief introduction about Precis writing . 

What is Precis Writing all about ?

When you are asked in any examination to write a precis , You are given a long paragraph about any particular Idea or Expression . You have to write a summary of the whole passage usually under the one third of the original passage words. The passage may be descriptive type where description about Places or scenes of Objects are described Or it may be Narrative type where stories or Events are narrated Or it may be Reflective type which contains reflections on some virtues or vices , or an abstract thinking like Death, Kindness of God . 

So First of all you have to understand the whole idea conveyed in the Original Passage You are given to write Precis about . Because although the thought about the Descriptive and Narrative type passage looks flat, it becomes complex to understand the idea about the Reflexive Precis. 

So while You proceed to precise any Passage , the First and Foremost thing is to Understand the main message or idea conveyed in the Passage.  So if you don't know the meaning of some words and unfortunately those words becomes the key words to understand the main idea of the given passage , then you will not be able to write the proper Precis of the given passage . 

So ? What is required to understand the complete idea of the given passage ?

First of all you should have a explicit idea about the meaning of the given words in a passage . But only knowing the meaning of the words is not enough . You have understand the use of those words because same words can be used to convey the different idea . To make up the gap , you have to be good in English grammar also. Without grammar we can not write a single word in grammar. So it  is useless to discuss the importance of Grammar in this Article .  Importance of Grammar is always there in English writing .

Now what do you need to understand the meaning of those particular words which may define what you are writing in precis ? It is called Vocabulary . The words which are less used in day to day communication and they are some how tough to understand if you have not heard or read those word several times. 

So in case of higher studies - the less used, uncommon words which are tough to understand if you have not learned about the words before may be categorized as Vocabulary .  I hope you have some Idea about the importance of Vocabulary in Precis writing.

Writing a successful precis is very tough if you can't catch the central idea . Some times it has been reported by the students that they have somehow managed to understand the context, but they are unable to express their idea while writing precis . 

So , both job is crucial . First you have to understand and Second you have to deliver. Lets understand the Importance in both cases .

Importance of Vocabulary in getting the central idea of the passage

In precis writing you have to write the gist of the given passage . So it is very important to understand the main idea conveyed in the passage. It is not mandatory to know the meaning of the Every Word mentioned in the passage. Instead it is important to get the main idea. Suppose if you don't know the meaning of 2% of the whole words, even then you will be able to manage to get the central idea . But if it goes beyond that , it may be the determiner of the quality of your Precis. 

If you wish to write a high quality precis then you have to increase your vocabulary . I hope you know that Vocabulary means the stock of Words in any language. It is useless to mention that those words are not very common in use. 

Importance of Vocabulary may also be drawn from a widely used word which changes its meaning according to its context. 

Lets take a word , " ISSUE" . This particular word is used to convey different meaning in different context. 

For example -    The 74th issue of this magazine was published last Sunday.

                           The Earl had died without a male issue. 

From the given example it has been revealed that same word has been used for two different context. In first sentence it meant that the the magazine was published 74th time and in the Second sentence it has been revealed that the Earl has died without giving birth to any male child. The word ' Issue ' has many other meaning according to the context of its use. 

Now lets consider that you don't know the meaning of the word " Earl" .( It is a rank of nobility in Britain. ) Will it not be tough for you to figure out the meaning of the second sentence. And If you don't know the meaning deciding key word " Earl" ( as issue has several meaning) , will you be able to get a clear idea about the sentence !!! Of course not . 

While writing the precis , either you will avoid that sentence or you will have a implicit idea about the passage. ( Remember , this is only an example , the actual scenario differs and it becomes really tougher).  And it is useless to say that it has direct impact over the quality of your precis writing. 

I believe that you have understood the importance of Vocabulary while you are understanding the meaning of the given passage . Lets move to the next part.\

Importance of Vocabulary while You are writing precis 

 

This is the most important part because this portion will be examined by your teacher or your readers. 

Suppose you have been given a passage which contains 180 words. 

So You have decided to write the whole idea within 60 words . I assume that you are following the exact strategy how to write a successful precis and You have eliminated all the examples ( If any) and trying to precise the passage . But you are unable to cut it down under 80 words . As you have low stock of words, you are unable to move the words around . If you delete any sentence it is forbidding you to express your though totally . 

In this common scenario , which things will help ?  It is your vocabulary . There are plenty of words which you can use to convey a vast idea. You can reduce the word drastically using only one word instead of seven or eight words. 

You can use one word substitution for those words. You can use Idiomatic Expression to reduce your word count.  That is where the essence of Vocabulary persists.  The above scenario is common for Descriptive and Narrative type precis writing.  

In case of Reflexive precis writing , the thing become more difficult . Because in case of Reflexive Precis , as there is a different idea or context shown in the passage compared to the other types of Precis writing, You have to write the total precis in your own words. 

As in case of Descriptive and Narrative type of precis writing, you can directly copy the words used in the given paragraph, It is difficult to use the words given in the Reflexive paragraph. Because the examples given in the Reflexive Precis indicates completely different idea.  

So to express completely , you have to write the precis in your own words. And if you want to maintain a good quality, then ? there is no other option but to increase your Vocabulary .
