To get success in competitive examinations, it is very important to set your goal and act accordingly. The competitive examinations have a great variance in terms of recruitment agencies and job profile and job category.

You can categorize the levels of examinations in three stages. Matric level higher secondary level and graduate level.

We find a few vacancies which are compatible for 8th standard.

The level of difficulty is set upon the standard of working ethics in different government offices. Depending upon the level of examination the standard of questions which are asked in the examination is set.

The most number of vacancies is found in the matric level examinations. So according to the rule of probability and chances of getting a metric level and under metric label job is near to the proximity.

Now it's time to consider what should be in your mind while you are setting off your goal.

  1. Which type of jobs are offered by which recruitment agencies.
  2. The syllabus and level of difficulties of questions for that particular post.
  3. Your educational qualification to satisfy the requirements of that particular job.
  4. Which job could be gotten easily with the area of your expertise (subject wise).
  5. The reference books and study material.
  6. Preparation strategy.
  7. Time management.
  8. Time management during preparation.
  9. Time management in the examination hall.
  10. Perfect guide to help you in the implementation of the entire process.

Now let us describe the above mentioned topics briefly.

Which types of jobs are offered by which recruitment agencies.

As we all know that there are two governments functioning in our country namely the central government or union government and state governments. These two governments invite applications to fill the vacancies for their administrative and operative offices. The most graduate level examinations are taken to fill the Administrative vacancies and operative offices are filled through below graduate level examinations.
As we all know that there are two governments functioning in our country namely the central government or union government and state governments. These two governments invite applications to fill the vacancies for their administrative and operative offices.

The most graduate level examinations are taken to fill the Administrative vacancies and operative offices are filled through below graduate level examinations.

The main recruitment agencies for the Union Government are UPSC (Union Public Service Commission and SSC (Staff Selection Commission). These two recruitment agencies provide the top most Government Jobs. These two agencies work to fill the vacancies for the Offices of Core Union Government. Actually the Government is run by the officers selected through these agencies. IAS, IPS, IFS officers are selected through UPSC examinations. The details of the job profiles and related information has to be provided in a separate article. Click here to read that.

Just like UPSC for union Government, PSC takes the examinations for state Governments' administrative and operative offices. For example in the case of West Bengal PSC, it conducts examinations like WBCS, Miscellaneous Services etc. Exams to choose staff for administrative post selections. It also recruits various group d staffs for state government offices. It also conducts recruitment to the Judiciary.

The list of exams conducted by West Bengal PSC has been discussed in a separate article. Read that for full details.

Other than these recruitment agencies, there are many different types of jobs offered by different recruitment agencies.

A consolidated banking sector recruitment is conducted by IBPS (Institute of banking personnel selection) through CBDT. It recruits clerical and PO posts for all the banks in the country undertaken by the Government of India. SBI and RBI conduct separate competitive exams for their administrative and operative posts.

Another big recruitment agency is RRB (Railway Recruitment Board). It recruits a large number of staff nationwide frequently. It conducts Group-d exams (Now Pay Band -I), NTPC, ALP, TTE, Technicians, Direct CA (Commercial Apprentice) etc.

Along with that some departments conduct recruitment processes solely. It includes High courts and district courts, SAIL, BHAIL, NAVY, DRDO etc.

The syllabus and level of difficulties of questions for that particular post.

Although the syllabus for different exams varies with the different recruitment agencies, we can take an overview of the total syllabus of the entire competitive exam empire. The topic remains approximately the same. The level of difficulty varies with the level of examination pattern, i.e. depends on the required educational qualification. The lowest standard of questions is asked in an exam having minimum required qualification of class viii while the highest being in a graduate level exam.
What is the overall syllabus of Competitive examination?

This is the most important thing in order to get success in any examination.

The total topics asked in the competitive examination is as follows -

  1. Mathematics.
  2. General Intelligence / Reasoning
  3. General knowledge / General awareness.
  4. English
  5. Current affairs.
  6. Psychological aptitude test.

Now, just take an overview which type of subtopic includes these topics. The detailed information has to be given in a separate article. Read that article here.

Mathematics

There are basically no competitive examinations without any question from this subject. So you have to be Very consistent about practicing mathematics. In most exams the mathematics of class 10th standard is asked in multiple choice type objective questions. The subtopic includes Numerical ability, Mensuration, Geometry, Algebra. For details of these read another article here.

General Intelligence / Reasoning

This topic is common with almost every competitive examination. There are different sub topics from which questions are asked in the examination. Some general items include Analogy, Series, Find the missing number, Direction, Blood relation, arrangement, Syllogism, Dice, Odd number. These topics are Common to almost every examination where questions from General Intelligence are asked. These topics are generally easy to understand and need only intense practice to master it. There are some other topics which are asked in the graduate level examinations such as Statement -conclusion, Statement-assumption, Sitting arrangement. This is not very easy and it needs utmost attention to master it. These are also called verbal reasoning. There is also non-verbal reasoning out there. Non verbal means, There will be some pictorial problems to be solved. The non verbal reasoning may also be asked based on sequences, odd one out etc. These types of questions are asked in the banking examinations. The statement - conclusion, Sitting arrangement, Dice, non verbal reasoning is essential for various types of banking examinations such as IBPS clerk, IBPS PO, SBI clerk, SBI PO, RBI clerk etc. Read my other articles for the topics which are asked in different examinations. Examination voice topic has been discussed there in detail. SBI PO, RBI clerk etc. Read my other articles for the topics which are asked in different examinations. Examination voice topic has been discussed there in detail. SBI PO, RBI clerk etc. Read my other articles for the topics which are asked in different examinations. Examination voice topic has been discussed there in detail.

General knowledge / General awareness

There are no competitive examinations which do not include General Knowledge or General awareness topics. For general knowledge preparation, you have to recall every subject you read till class ten. The questions from Physical science, life science, geography, history are almost common to every competitive examination. In addition to that the questions from two other subjects ie political science and economics is also asked in the examination. These two subjects are from class 12 standard. The most questions asked from political science are about Indian constitution. The questions from economics are generally asked in some 12th or graduate level examinations.

Current affairs

One more important thing which comes in the general awareness category is current affairs. The important current events of national and international importance are asked in this category of question. The current event includes the present high profile post bearers of Government and private sector enterprises, the awards given for expertise in various fields like literature, sports, journalism, scientific improvement and discoveries, the winner of various national and international level sports, present high profile post holders of international organizations like WHO, UNICEF, UNO etc. The recent international exercises performed between the countries in the army, navy, air force and other governmental departments.

But there are some specific characteristics of the type of questions which are asked in various examinations. It applies to both general awareness and current affairs. Like other subjects it also varies with the level of difficulty of the examinations and type of examinations. It needs a lengthy article to discuss the types of exams and the types of questions asked from general knowledge and current affairs. I should definitely tell that in another article. For example, in the banking sector examinations the current events based on sports are given priority in almost every examination conducted by banking recruitment agencies or banks themselves.

The international relations between various countries are asked in the UPSC examinations. There are many examples of this kind. I will definitely discuss this later in a different article. To summarize from general knowledge you have to cover the following topics ..

  1. History
  2. Geography
  3. Physical science
  4. Life science
  5. Indian polity
  6. Economics
  7. Current affairs.

While you are thinking about your preparation you should prepare yourself for this every topic simultaneously to crack any examinations very quickly.

English

The questions from English language are common to almost every examination except some railway examinations.

The question from the total English language covers the grammar, writing skill and comprehension. The questions from grammar section includes synonyms, antonyms, one word substitution, idioms, error finding or correction, rearrange the part of sentences, improvement of sentences, voice change, narration change, preposition, group verb or phrasal verb, tenses, right use of various words etc.

The questions from writing skill covers translation from English to regional language and vice versa, precis writing, report writing, letter writing, essay writing, story writing. Basically in any examination only three types of writing skills questions are asked. The topics vary with the different examinations. The most common topic of writing skill is precise writing, translation and report writing. In case of West Bengal State Public Service Commission examination there are some writing skill topics and it includes essay and letter writing.

A separate article in this regard is highly recommended.

The difficulty level varies with the gravity of the post applied for.

The higher the post, the deeper the questions.

In the case of mathematics, questions from only arithmetic are asked in an eighth standard examination. In a tenth level examination, a few questions from mensuration, trigonometry are asked along with arithmetic. Remember one thing, arithmetic is common to every examination. In a hs level examination question from mensuration and trigonometry is a little bit tougher in nature than a 10 th level examination. There are some questions from Algebra and Geometry of low difficulty level in this type of examination. In a graduate level examination, questions from Arithmetic, Algebra, Mensuration, Geometry, Trigonometry are asked. These questions are basically of class 12 standard difficulty level. But not all the topics of class 12 have been included in this section.

Remember one thing this is only an indicative example. There may be some little deviation in a few examinations.

The rest of the subjects also resemble the pattern of Mathematics. The level of difficulties of questions varies examination wise.

Your educational qualification to satisfy the requirements of that particular job.

I have said in the beginning of this article, all the people are not eligible to apply for each and every post. If you are not a graduate then you cannot sit for the examination which is compatible for a graduate student. You have to pass your degree course to qualify for the graduate level examination. But there is no bar of your passing marks or grade to be eligible to sit for a graduate level examination. But if a notification has been published in the lowest qualification being secondary examination passed category you can sit for that examination even if you have a graduate degree. Most of the examinations conducted by UPSC are compatible for a graduate student and obviously who has passed the examination from an Indian University. In case of SSC, there is graduate level examination, higher secondary level examination as well as secondary level examination. So before applying for any of the posts, you should go to the official notification very carefully and find out if you are eligible to apply for the post or not.

Which job could be gotten easily with the area of your expertise (subject wise).

Different examinations require different subject expertise. But there is no examination where no questions from mathematics are asked. If you are a medium quality student (according to your academic score), and you have low expertise in mathematics, then you should target group d level of examinations like Railway group d (Now it is called Pay Band -I), State group d recruitment examinations. In the case of Railway group d There is no question from English language. It is true for NTPC also. So it will be very effective if you target Railway group -D when you have little expertise in mathematics and no expertise in English.

If you have Expertise over mathematics or the toughest mathematical problem, then you can choose to complete the graduate level examination.

As a general study it has been found that if you have above 75% of academic score then you should go for a graduate level examination. If you have lower than that you should try other things. This is only for a quick success rate.

There is no hard and fast rule that the lower scorer will never succeed in a graduate level examination. It will just take some time to get to the position of getting jobs. If you have enough time to invest, then you should choose your job of passion and start pursuing it.

Preparation strategy.

Your preparation strategy needs to be perfect. If you can plan it correctly, then you can get a job very quickly.

What is the idea preparation strategy of Competitive Exam

Keep in mind one thing that you have to be focused on during your preparation. You have to be fully dedicated and passionate about your dream job. You should leave all kinds of time-consuming activities like gossiping with friends, going to a party or spending vacations with your boyfriend or girlfriend etc. No distractions should divert your mind away.

The following points should be considered

  •  Keep regular physical exercise to sharpen your body and mind.
  • Have a schedule of practicing time. Divide your time subject and topic wise.
  • Give more time to weaker subjects and topics.
  • Always try to hear from the successful ones.
  • Do not divert to all the shiny objects over the internet.
  • Don't try to copy and follow the advice of everyone.
  • Try to learn from someone who has the real expertise and sufficient knowledge about that. Once you are satisfied and become sure that he has achieved his success in reality as he has claimed to have.
  • If you are spending 70% of your time to learn new things, then invest 30% of your time to revise the learned things
  • Always keep checking yourself.
  • Attempt frequent mock tests. Have a test even if you have taken the tests earlier.
  • If you are learning a new thing, then do not leave that thing in the middle until you digest that thing in full.
  • Schedule your subjects in such a way that all the topics may be prepared simultaneously.
  • If there is any second stage of written examination, then start preparing for the second stage simultaneously with the preparation of the first stage examination.
  • Remember one thing. , in the world of competitive examinations, there is nothing less important. You have to understand the probability of questions depending upon the experience of previous year questions.
  • Set a bigger goal to have at least a minimum one.

Time management.

How to manage your Time During Govt. Job Preparation

I believe everyone of us knows the importance of time and its management in every sphere of life. We have only twenty four hours a day to spend. The time management during your preparation will hold the probability of your success.

Keep in mind one thing: Focus on any subject in your life can make a huge difference between your success and failure.

Priority is the main key. If you give priority to your goal, then it will not betray you.

But while you are preparing for your competitive exams, you cannot deny all of your social responsibilities. If you are from a lower middle class or middle class family, then you have to think about helping your family economically. Even if you can't help your family with money, you have to arrange your spending yourself for your preparation.

Taking private tuition as your part time job, may be beneficial for you both financially and from preparational aspects. But you should teach the students of class 9th standards and above. Teaching students of class 9 and above resembles your competitive examination syllabus. So it will definitely give boosts to your preparation and will also satisfy your economical need.

In this scenario time management is very necessary. You have to keep time for your studies, social responsibilities and earning for your study related expenditure.

You have to divide the whole of your estimated time into parts. Keep sufficient time for sleeping. Sleeping, bathing, physical exercise, taking food should not take more than 10 hours. Keep two hours for self earning and devote the rest of 12 hours for extensive study.

Now the right use of this 12 hours may give you the maximum result. The time management during preparation and during the time of examinations are different things. Let's divide the topic and discuss.

Time management during preparation

While you are in the preparation stage, train your mind in such a way that you must have to get the next job you sit for the examination. Always think that this is your last chance to get a job. If you can really think about this, it will be easier for you to get the next job. The next vision comes in your mind of which subject you have to focus on and which has to be kept apart.

Remember one thing: every subject is important. So every subject with special emphasis on the subject which is common to every examination and the subjects which you lack some knowledge about.

Manage your time in such a way that you spend time in mathematics, general studies, General Intelligence and obviously writing skills. Do not leave any of the topics untouched by you.

The study of tier 2 if any should be started from the first stage. Do not start the study of the 2nd stage only after qualifying in the first stage examination. You may manage your time according to the time mentioned below.

  • Mathematics- 1.5 hours
  • English grammar - 1 hour
  • GK- 3 hours
  • General Intelligence / Reasoning - 1 hour
  • Writing skill- 1.5 hours.
  • Mock tests- 2 hour.

This is for general time management. The rest of the time, you have to manage yourself so that you can devote yourself to the section in which you are weaker. The time may be provided on some different topic other than this which is rare and is asked in a very few examinations.

Time management during examination

As I have said many important things throughout the article, this is one of the most important things to get your dream job.

Suppose you have followed all the above mentioned advice and you are very confident about your preparation.

Now feel like you are in the exam hall, you have started taking your examination. The first ten questions are very easy. You have answered those questions in a few seconds.

The number 11th question is unknown to you. You are just trying to recall whether you have read the question before or not.

After a struggle of 2 minutes, you have marked the question with 60% doubt in your mind.

But the question is still hammering your brain, what the actual answer of the question is. After that every question seems confusing to you. You are unable to make quick decisions. Ultimately you make mistakes in your apparently known questions.

How horrible the situation is !!!

But it happens to many of the aspirants who do not know how to manage time during the time of taking examinations in the examination hall. If you don't want to feel such an embarrassing situation in the examination hall, then you should consider the following things.

  • Mental aspect.
  • Segmentation of questions.
  • Understanding your ability.
  • Get accustomed with the exam hall atmosphere without being able to sit for the exam even once.

Mental aspect.

I have said earlier that while you are preparing, you have to inject one thought in your mind that the next exam is your last chance to get any government job.

But while you are in the examination hall, you have to keep that thought out of your brain. If sitting in an examination hall, you are thinking this is your last chance to get any job, you are definitely going to miss that one too.

Thinking me crazy?

But that is the bitter truth.

Listen, when you think in such a way that this is the last chance to get the job, you will try to answer all the questions and you will try to score 100% marks in that exam. This is the worst mind set.

When your mindset directs you to score 100% as you have to get the job in this last chance, then you have to answer all the questions. It will definitely lead you to attempt every question. Attempting unknown questions in the examination is always a great risk. It will lead to negative marking and if you get plenty of negative marks, then you are going to miss the job. It's 100% guaranteed.

Then? What is the solution?

When you are in the examination hall, the first thing you have to do is to take a deep breath and pacify your heart.

The next thing you have to tell your Brain that you have to take the exam to its best. If you don't get the job, then there is always a second chance in life and even if you don't get the job, you have the ability to do anything in life to run your coming days.

See, you are in a competitive examination. It means that you have to beat your competitors. It's not necessary to score 100% to get the job.

There may be difficult questions in an exam. Those questions may be difficult for others as well. The first and foremost thing is to try to avoid making any mistakes in exams. If you are unfamiliar with any questions, the best practice is to leave that question.

If you have studied and prepared well, then keep faith in yourself and try to make your brain understand that if a question is hard for you then it is going to be hard for the others too.

Your exam will be best if you have not scored any negative marks in your exam. Believe me, this is the best practice.

So your mindset should encourage you to take the examination in its best and the exam is best when you have not scored any negative marks in your examination. Pacify your heart to take the best exam not to regard the exam as it is the last chance to get the job.

Segmentation of questions.

In every examination, there are easy questions, moderate questions and hard questions. Among the total duration of your exam, divide the time to answer different questions in different segments. The first segment is to be devoted to answering only the easy questions. Next you have to try some moderate questions and then hard questions.

But it's going to be tough to determine the difficulty level of the question during the examination.

The easiest way is prompt answering ability. Start from the very beginning and don't soil any time to determine the right answer. The answer of such questions which is coming instantly is to be answered at the first segment. Almost 50% of the total question should be answered in 20% of the total time. Then spend another 30% of your total time for moderate questions and the rest 50% of the time may be then devoted to the hard questions.

But the sequence is very important.

If you try hard things at the very beginning, then it may lower your confidence. Obey the sequence, your score will be the highest of your ability.

Understanding your ability.

This is also an important thing. Every aspirant has a favorite subject. He believes that almost 100% of the question is answerable by him.

Find out your area of expertise. Then rearrange the topics in descending order according to your expertise. Follow this

Sequence in your exam time. The easiest topic should be attempted first and then you should go for the harder one.

Get accustomed with the exam hall atmosphere without being able to sit for the exam even once.

Your ability to do so will give you an extra benefit in the exam hall.

For this purpose, you have to sit for Mock tests multiple times.

Try taking one mock test everyday. Be honest about test duration, while taking any mock test.

As a result of taking frequent mock tests, you will get accustomed to the mental situation, proximity of error, how negative marking affects your overall score etc.

The best thing is that you will be able to know about your area of expertise and which type of questions are easy for you, which is hard for you and other types of questions which are reducing your score.

It will definitely help to manage the timings as I stated earlier in this article.

Perfect guide to help you in the implementation of the entire process.

How to chose your perfect guide for Competitive exam

Every successful person has someone who acted as his friend, philosopher and guide to help him get his desired success .They are the so-called “Gurus” of our life. They are the most important one.

Try to remember your childhood teacher who shaped your mindset, philosophy of your life .If you obeyed someone in our life, you have definitely experienced some sort of success in your life. Believe me, they are the most important person in your life who will help you find your flaws and help you get the desired result sooner than you could have got if you tried alone.

Even the great politician, Mahatma Gandhi had his political teacher GK Gokhale in his life.

In your competitive career, you should seek assistance from such gurus during your preparation.

But obviously you have to be choosy in this case. You should seek advice from such a person who was successful in his life.

The success should obviously be in your niche. Suppose someone is successful in engineering and you are seeking advice from him in the matter of competitive examination. It is obvious that he will not be able to help you in this case.

You have to take advice from such a person who was successful in his competitive examination career.

Suppose someone is giving tuition to students over the years but he has not cracked a single exam in his life, you should avoid him. Because it may be that he has some knowledge in a particular subject or can provide advice on how to become successful. But he will feel the lack of experience to share with you because he is unsuccessful and it is obvious that he could not break the lock of being successful in his life.

You should listen to such a person who has achieved success in his competitive examination career.

Find such a teacher from your locality and take advice or tuition from him. If there is none in your locality you should increase the radius of your area to find such an adviser.
